Dry Creek Beds
Creating a dry creek bed is the perfect solution for channeling excess water flow and keeping your lawn from eroding. Besides the practical aspect of improving your landscape drainage, if done correctly, a dry creek bed can also bring a unique, beautiful design to your lawn. Don’t let the heavy rainfall (which is very common to Western North Carolina) cause puddles, soil erosion, and mosquito breeding grounds on your property. How We Work With Clients
Design
The first step to creating a dry creek bed is careful planning to ensure the design’s success. This is a very important step to make sure the water drains properly and creates a beautiful setting. We work with our clients to choose the plants and rock design they would like to incorporate. Once we have an idea of the design, we can start creating the dry creek bed, which will mimic the movement of water.
The first step is looking for channels where water flows naturally after a rain. From here we can layout the creek bed, but first, we must understand the elevations of the yard. Designing the creek bed correctly with the landscape elevation will ensure proper drainage. Also, if the dry creek bed will be near an existing structure like a house, then we will need to make sure it’s designed to direct any runoff away from the structure and towards a drainage system. Once these factors are taken into consideration, we can start creating the dry creek bed.
Installation
First, we start by digging the trench for the creek bed. This can mean placing curves in the creek bed and changing the width throughout to create a more realistic look. We can even incorporate a large landmark in the landscape as a focal point if we plan ahead! Once we have the trench dug, we can move to laying rocks.
Next, we can start laying out the boulders and plants along the outside of the creek bed. These boulders will be used to channel the water, while also contributing to the overall design. Once these are in place, we will install a weed barrier in the middle to prevent weeds from popping up. This can also help control erosion in the area. Once this barrier is installed, we can drop the final river cobble into the trench.
